Valladolid, the colonial heart of Yucatán
Valladolid is one of the most charming magical towns in Mexico and an ideal base for exploring eastern Yucatán. With colorful streets, colonial architecture and spectacular cenotes just around the corner, it is much more than a stop on the way to Chichén Itzá. Here is what you can do.
Chichén Itzá right next door
Valladolid's great advantage is its proximity to Chichén Itzá: just 40 minutes away. You can visit the Wonder of the World early, before the crowds, and head back to town for lunch. It is the best gateway to the archaeological site.
Dreamlike cenotes
The area is famous for its cenotes. Cenote Suytun, with its iconic beam of light over a platform, is one of the most photographed in the world. In the center you will find Cenote Zací, and nearby are Oxman and Hubikú, perfect for swimming in crystal-clear water.
Ek Balam
About 30 minutes away, the archaeological site of Ek Balam surprises visitors with its Acropolis and remarkably well-preserved stucco sculptures. Here you can still climb the main structure to enjoy a panoramic view of the jungle.
The charm of the town
Do not miss the Calzada de los Frailes, with its colorful houses, and the Convent of San Bernardino de Siena. As evening falls, the center comes alive with marquesitas, crafts and Yucatecan cuisine at its finest.
Río Lagartos and Las Coloradas
From Valladolid you can also reach the north coast to see the famous pink lakes of Las Coloradas and the flamingos of Río Lagartos, an ideal excursion for nature lovers.
Tips for your visit
- Get up early to see Chichén Itzá or Ek Balam without crowds.
- Bring a swimsuit and non-slip shoes for the cenotes.
- Try cochinita pibil and marquesitas in the town center.
